Leap Forward : Calligraphy by Yumiko Tomita

CoCollaborations is pleased to present "Leap Forward", an exhibition of recent works by Japanese calligrapher Yumiko Tomita, who operates under the moniker "Brushstroke Navigator." This solo show marks a transformative new chapter in her artistic career.

Tomita owns and directs studio kotonoha, a gallery and calligraphy studio in Tokyo's Kuramae district. Dedicated to sharing the joy of Japanese calligraphy, she passionately teaches both local students and international visitors. Although she mastered traditional calligraphy at an early age, she spent years focusing on family life. 

Her artistic trajectory shifted when her family relocated to New York City, where she met CoCollaborations owner Coco Masuda. Recognizing Tomita’s extraordinary skill, Masuda invited her to participate in the 2013 curated group exhibition Transitory – Contemporary Japanese Calligraphy, launching her public career as a fine artist.

Since returning to Japan, Tomita has actively expanded her practice through studio teaching and exhibition participation. Featured in this show is 無尽蔵 (Inexhaustible), a piece recently selected for the prestigious 2026 Mainichi Shodo Exhibition.

Opening reception: September 25, Friday, 5 pm-7 pm.
Tomita will perform a calligraphy demonstration from 6 pm.

Workshops: 
Coinciding with the solo show, Yumiko will offer three one-hour calligraphy workshops—an ideal opportunity for anyone looking to experience Japanese calligraphy firsthand. Following these special sessions with Yumiko, CoCollaborations plans to continue to offer regular Japanese calligraphy classes to the community.
