This singular Matcha bowl by Yukiko Tsuchiya is a masterclass in texture and depth. Its etched surface and deep, iron-rich earth tones evoke the primal beauty of a hidden cavern. The randomly applied glaze is a testament to Tsuchiya-san’s mastery, creating a visual movement that feels both spontaneous and grounded in the Karatsu tradition.

Profile:
Trained under the legendary Takashi Nakazato at the renowned Ryūta Kiln, Yukiko Tsuchiya represents a compelling bridge between the rigorous traditions of Karatsu-yaki and a modern, versatile aesthetic. In 2002, she established her own studio, Yukiko Gama (Kiln), in the rugged, mountainous landscape of Karatsu, Saga Prefecture.
Tsuchiya’s work is defined by its "quiet strength." While she honors the historical weight of Karatsu ware—celebrated for its earthy, iron-rich clay—she softens that traditional ruggedness with a refined, feminine sensitivity. Her signature Black Karatsu is particularly distinctive; it is a living glaze that reveals hidden depths of silver, indigo, and moss-green when held to the light.
At the heart of Yukiko Gama is the philosophy of functional beauty. Tsuchiya believes a piece is truly finished only when it is integrated into a home and used at the table. Her vessels are designed to be tactile and unpretentious, yet they possess an elegance that elevates both a simple morning meal and a formal kaiseki dinner. For Tsuchiya, pottery is not a static object of art, but a dynamic companion to daily life that grows more beautiful with time and touch.
