The Calligrapher's Words
This piece was what inspired me to take up art again after a long hiatus.
At the time, my daughter was studying abroad in Sweden, so I stayed in Gothenburg for two weeks to visit her. I felt the presence of the natural trees and the quiet, mature atmosphere of Europe. I captured that moment in this piece. I set out to express the town's tranquil atmosphere and its people, with the mountains visible in the distance.

The kanji character 閑 is composed of the “gate” and the “tree” (a partition).
A tree stands at the gate, preventing beasts and evil forces from entering. It is believed that the area inside is thus peaceful. I rendered the “gate” to evoke the atmosphere of the distant mountain range, and wrote the character for “tree” to convey tranquility.
I used a light wash of vintage Chinese ink. The paper is also vintage Chinese calligraphy paper.
