Matcha Bowls by Ben Suga of Suga Pottery in soft yellow.
The surface is finished in a lighter, more oxidized Shino glaze. Subtle variations in color and texture record the path of flame through the kiln, giving the piece a quiet, geological depth. Because each bowl is handmade, it has unique variations in color and textured glaze. In rare instances, this glaze blushes into a fiery orange, depending on the atmosphere within the kiln. Because the effect is so uncommon, it’s always a joy to see these pieces emerge from their long journey through the fire.
With roots in Japan and apprenticing with renowned ceramic masters in Karatsu, Japan, and Minnesota, Ben Suga focuses on creating high-quality ceremonial teaware, tableware, and sculpture in his studio in the Catskill Mountains.
These stoneware bowls are fired at high temperatures, resulting in their durability.
