These small Karatsu-style tea/sake cups feature the distinctive Kawa-kujira (Whale Skin) style. One of the decorative techniques of Karatsu ware, Kawa-kujira is characterized by a darkened rim painted with an iron-rich pigment. The name derives from the resemblance between the dark rim and the skin of a whale, while the lighter body evokes the color of the whale itself.
With roots in Japan and apprenticing with renowned ceramic masters in Karatsu, Japan, and Minnesota, Ben Suga focuses on creating high-quality ceremonial teaware, tableware, and sculpture in his studio in the Catskill Mountains.
These stoneware bowls are fired at high temperatures, resulting in their durability.
They also make perfect gifts for anyone. We offer signature gift wrapping, including an eco-friendly kraft box, noshi paper, and a mizuhiki tie.
